The
pieces shown on the gallery pages are a series of heavily
textured acrylics, most of which are mounted floating in
front of slightly reflective black backings.
These pieces
typically start with the textured background on 1/2"
thick wood or hardboard panels, often using garnet,
pumice or even rice and sand to achieve a variety of
earthy textures. After the texture layer has dried,
colors are layered on including liberal use of bronzes,
copper, stainless steel and various gold pigments. I use
painting methods that highlight the texture and allow for
complex coloration, transparency and reflection. The
result is layers and surfaces that cannot easily be
described as one particular hue or another, as metallic
or straight pigment, or as transparent or opaque. Often I
use reflective paints and special interference pigments
(which shift color value slightly depending on the
viewing angle), causing the appearance of the paintings
to change depending on the light source and time of day,
inviting prolonged and repeated viewing, pulling in the
observer.
Currently
I am studying extending the black backings into three
dimensions-- monolithic, slightly reflective black
armatures that provide a geometric foil for the heavily
textured, organic feel of the painted panels.
Most of
the pieces currently featured on this website are
available for viewing or purchase at Little Gorgeous
Things Gallery & Shops, located at 359 Commercial
Street, Provincetown, Massachusetts.
